How Leaders Describe a Typical Day at Work
I work everyday to fundraise to support our mission in local elementary schools. A typical day includes emails, strategic and project planning meetings, all aspects of the donor cycle, and acknowledging funders with a special note. I share stories about the kids we impact by means of our website, social media channels, emails, and newsletters. I also write grants and plan for our major events, whether it be securing a corporate sponsorship, mapping out table seating, or creating the program.
Tasks & Responsibilities May Include
- Assign, supervise, and review the activities of fundraising staff.
- Compile or develop materials to submit to granting or other funding organizations.
- Conduct research to identify the goals, net worth, charitable donation history, or other data related to potential donors, potential investors, or general donor markets.
- Contact corporate representatives, government officials, or community leaders to increase awareness of organizational causes, activities, or needs.
- Design and edit promotional publications, such as brochures.

Being organized and detail-oriented are helpful skills in fundraising. It's also important to enjoy working with people. I've also learned that resiliency is crucial. In fundraising, you'll hear no a lot. You need to have the confidence and resilience to keep going until you get a yes.

When you're looking for a job - volunteer! It's such a great way to get experience in things you'd not usually get the chance to do, as well as creating a network of contacts and learning new skills that you can demonstrate in other areas of your life.
I encourage others to talk to a lot of different people and build relationships. Reach out to people working in a role that you're interested in and ask them questions. That's a great way to explore what a certain job or industry might be like. It's also important to do a really good job at whatever you're doing, whether that's a class project, grade, or anything else. Doing great work is how you'll stand out. You'll get noticed and people will want to give you opportunities.
