My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Always liked math, didn't know what to do with that knowledge.
2.
Went to Univ of FL, majored in Math, thought I'd be a math teacher.
3.
Lost interest in teaching, didn't want to do research, went to college counselor.
4.
Counselor suggested Industrial Engineering. I didn't even know what that was.
5.
Took a lot of courses in the sciences, focused on the "human" side of engineering.
6.
Got a job with Southern Bell, expanded knowledge with each new evolution of the network.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Engineering is too hard for girls. The boys won't talk to you or help you.
How I responded:
Break down the hard part into smaller manageable pieces. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Speak up.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Being a shy girl/introvert in a field of mostly boys (for every 10-15 boys, there were 2-3 girls). The girls stuck together, but when I was the only girl, I knew I had to talk to the boys as equals, not in a flirty sexual way.
