Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Nothing. If there was noise, I tuned it out. I focused on my studies and my path. I was a certified Network Professional when I heard: 'You seem smart, maybe you can learn about Technology.' The noise was unintended, but Stereotyped me by my Gender.
How I responded:
Focus on what you enjoy and what you're good at. Be gracious and help those around you find their own path and they will be too busy to create noise... and they will understand better. Stand strong as an example for others. You don't have to have all the answers and you don't have to explain yourself. Look for people who have their own path and surround yourself with positive encouragement. The noise can't get through that way. Noise is created by those who have no path and no role model.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I had to pay for College (no scholarships). Part-time Jobs paid my bills and school. I lived cheap. Today, there are Scholarships, apply to any of them in time. Use your skills to Tutor, Babysit, to fill the gap. Don't stop school.
I had no local Family Support. My family was in another country and did not understand my Situation. I found like minded friends who became my local family. They encouraged and supported me. You need strong support, create it, be picky.
I pursued a dual path: Family business and college. I did not choose college over family business, I made both work. It allowed my family to support my direction and respect my really hard work. Try to compromise, but don't stop school, be patient.
