My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
When I was 17, I left Colombia to go to Canada as an exchange student and then to the US for college
2.
I'm a big risk-taker; that quality has opened me up to the most important opportunities in my life.
3.
Early in my career, I had the opportunity to move to Seattle to work on a short term project.
4.
I was going to be the youngest and least experienced on this new team, and the only female.
5.
My manager didn't want me to go; luckily, my mentors told me not to take "no" for an answer.
6.
Because I took that position, I got an opportunity to work abroad in the Czech Republic.
7.
I also worked in Brazil; I've always loved the challenge of living and working in other countries.
8.
After working abroad, I was able to take a position in management; it was a huge step.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Peers:
We don't want you to succeed here.
How I responded:
I'd love to say "no, I've never experienced discouragement," but I'd be lying. As much as you stay focused on the positive, that noise will sometimes creep in. For me, the "noise" has come from few peers at work, but again, having a mentor has been immensely helpful. You're going to have people around you that want you to succeed and very few people that want to tear you down. Don't let the negativity discourage you. Execute flawlessly and let the results speak for themselves.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I grew up in Colombia and did an exchange program in Canada. Experiencing another culture made me realize I wanted to pursue my college education in another country. I applied to another exchange program and wound up at the University of Missouri.
