Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You are too old to pursue a doctoral degree. The degree is too difficult and expensive. With a family and full time job, you will not have the time to devote to your studies.
How I responded:
I have a passion to help others learn and share my experiences as one of Toyota's CFOs for the past 32 years. Keep focused and do not lower your expectations in what you want to accomplish. Also, keep your goal written down along with the date of graduation and review this daily. I kept this in my billfold and referred to it daily. With the help of my family, it worked and now am an Assistant Professor at Liberty University online.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I was working full time and saved money each week to apply toward my education. I budgeted and planned each week how much I would need to save for each semester. My wife also contributed weekly in this process. We both worked hard and saved.
