Life & Career Milestones

My path in life took a while to figure out

  • 1.

Working while in college was a distraction but it taught me some great lessons.

  • 2.

A degree set me apart in my first jobs, it didn’t matter what it was in.

  • 3.

A master’s degree was reallly when I started to specialize in something.

  • 4.

I had mentors at every level.

  • 5.

The doctoral degree was all about realizing expertise, not about being called Doctor.

  • 6.

Through it all, my reputation was established by being thorough, accountable and the basics of responsibility, not in big things.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

That I should choose a technical career field rather than one in the liberal arts. But what has set me apart from those in business and technology are the skills I gained from the liberal arts. It’s what has given me a competitive edge.

  • How I responded:

Look for ways to differentiate yourself from the thousands of people who will also have your same degree and same basic credentials.
